First Responders
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Dear Neighbors:
Hurricane Season has arrived, and as always we hope for a quiet and peaceful season (June 1- Nov. 1).

If you are leaving for any part of the season, please remember to remove any and all lawn decorations and patio furniture to
your garage for safe storage.

If you have not filled out the CERT contact information form, please do so and return it to the black CERT box on the sign-up
table at the Clubhouse.

If you have a neighbor who has already left for the summer and you have their contact information, please fill out a form for them
and mark it with "BY NEIGHBOR."

Thank you for your continued support of the CERT team and First Responders.

Our Mission
The mission of the First Responders, as part of Pasco County Fire Rescue, is to provide emergency
medical assistance in the community until the Fire Rescue paramedics assume responsibility for the
incident.
When you call 911, the First Responders and paramedics are dispatched at the same
time.
Duty
We take one 12-hour shift each week, day or night, and we are on duty 24/7/365.  We work in pairs. The two duty responders
have radios for voice communications with Fire Rescue dispatch, the ambulance and fire engine.  In addition, all of our officers
– Chief, Assistant Chief and the Lieutenants, also have radios.  When we are notified of an emergency in the community, most
of our fellow responders show up to see if the duty responders need any additional help, because not only are the officers
monitoring the emergency, but the rest of us (25 at last count) always have our pagers on.
Residents should ensure that
their
File of Life is up to date and is posted on their refrigerator.
Our custom-designed golf cart, christened Medical 31, is also our station number.  The cart is stocked
with all the supplies we need to handle the emergency.  It has a top speed of 23 mph with flashing red
lights on top, but thankfully, no siren.
The Shift
The duty responders stay on the property for this period of time, and do not play golf or swim.  We play cards, billiards, work out,
hit range balls, get our housework done, but are always ready to run when the radios and pagers are activated by Fire Rescue
Dispatch, indicating someone on our property is in trouble, whether a resident, visitor or worker.

Compensation
Fire Rescue gives each responder a stipend of $15 per month, which everyone has agreed to donate back to our treasury to
help pay bills and purchase materials as needed.  We do this as neighbors helping neighbors, and when we get thank-you
cards from our grateful neighbors, we feel more than compensated.

Also…
As if being a first responder isn’t enough, we are also Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trained (See CERT
information below).  Interestingly enough, a first responder must be CERT- trained, but to become a member of CERT, a person
does not have to be a first responder!  First Responders are medical – CERT is disaster, whether the catastrophe comes from
Mother Nature or other emergency situation.

Join Us!
Any resident over the age of 22 and capable of passing the Pasco County requirements for volunteers is eligible to become a
TBGCC First Responder after completing a two-week course.  A medical background is not necessary.  We will teach you
everything you need to know, plus we have monthly training to keep your skill levels up.  Fire Rescue provides uniforms, life
insurance and a physical.  We give you your pager.
